The Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) is an intergovernmental organization, which continues the process started by the ALALC in 1960 by promoting the integration of the region. The ALADI (Articles 28 and 29 of Montevideo Treaty 1980 - TM80) has three political bodies: the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Conference of Evaluation and Convergence and the Committee of Representatives, as well as a technical body, the General Secretariat.

The member countries of ALADI, which signed the TM80, are: Argentine Republic, Republic of Bolivia, Federative Republic of Brazil, Republic of Chile, Republic of Colombia, Republic of Ecuador, United Mexican States, Republic of Paraguay, Republic of Peru, Eastern Republic of Uruguay and Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Later, on November 6th 1998, the Republic of Cuba was accepted as member country at the Tenth Meeting of the Council of Ministers, by Resolution 51(X), and became full member on August 26th 1999, once the correspondent formalities were fulfilled.

All Latin-American countries may integrate ALADI (Article 58 del TM80). Applications are considered by the Council of Ministers, according to the procedure established by Resolution 239 of the Committee of Representatives. Acceptance is granted by two thirds of votes for and none against.

The Committee of Representatives can approve the presence as observers of countries and international organizations or agencies which apply (Resolution 1, Article 28 of the Committee of Representatives).

Observers are regulated by Resolution 281 of the Committee of Representatives and are allowed to take part in open sessions of the Committee of Representatives and have access to unclassified documents.
